Thanking our Frontline Health Care Workers

Right now, the medical workers in our communities – all the nurses, doctors, and hospital staff – are working night and day battling the coronavirus on the front lines. We recognize the enormous pressure and strain that is being put on our healthcare systems and as a small thank you, we’ve allocated funds to have pizzas delivered to local hospitals in the communities where we operate. An employee in our Kansas City, MO office came up with this idea after running into a local ER nurse who “looked near tears and was saying how they are being run ragged and not eating on shift.”

Since Sunday, March 27th, we’ve delivered pizza to 41 hospital and medical facilities across the United States and in Mexico. Many of the hospitals we served have common names like Community, Memorial, Regional and University, but we also had a name on our list that has been in the press lately: Evergreen Health in Kirkland, Washington. Not only is this hospital close to our Seattle Service Center, but it is the hospital that took the majority of patients from the Life Care Center, which was the nursing home that faced one of the first widespread outbreaks in the US. This hospital has been on the front lines since day 1 of confirmed cases of this virus in the United States, and as of Thursday, they’ve had 213 confirmed cases and 42 deaths at the facility. The charge nurse was extremely thankful and said “they needed this.”

At one of our largest locations, 95% of our workforce resides in a county served by a single local hospital, which was later supported by an urgent care clinic that had modified their operations to become a COVID-19 testing site for the county. Both these facilities were on our list for deliveries.

Members from our team in Juarez, Mexico have joined in the effort as well, delivering subs to a hospital local to our Recycling Facility there. The staff was very grateful for the meals.

These deliveries were made possible by members of our dedicated sustainability team located in each of our regions throughout the country who regularly coordinate both internal and community engagement projects. We thank their team and the other employees who volunteered to make this happen!
